Albert Batalla completed the Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (BMBS) in 2017 (Autonomous University of Barcelona), being granted with the Extraordinary Award of Bachelor. In 2008 he started the residency in Psychiatry at Hospital Clínic de Barcelona, where he became interested in the neurobiology of cannabis use and its relation to psychotic disorders. In 2011 he started his PhD at the Department of Psychiatry and Clinical Psychobiology, University of Barcelona, under the supervision of Dr. Martín-Santos. In 2012 he performed a four-month traineeship at the neuroimaging lab of Melbourne Neuropsychiatry Centre, University of Melbourne, under the supervision of Prof. Murat Yücel. That same year he completed the residency of Psychiatry and started working as pre-doctoral researcher at the Fundació Clínic per a la Recerca Biomèdica (FCRB). He studied the impact of addiction (cannabis) on the outcome of psychotic disorders, cognitive control and brain volume, revealing gene-environment interactions that play a role in the sensitivity to the effects of cannabis on the brain. He completed his PhD in July 2014.
That same year he moved to the Netherlands, where he started working as a psychiatrist in Tactus Addiction Treatment and temporarily as postdoc at FCRB. In 2015 he joined NISPA (www.nispa.nl) and he got a position as senior lecturer (Master in Addiction Medicine) at the Radboud University and as a psychiatrist at the Radboud University Medical Center. Since 2018 he works as a psychiatrist and researcher at the University Medical Center Utrecht. His research focusses on the relation between early psychosis and substance use disorders, particularly cannabis use. He is involved in international projects (e.g. ENIGMA consortium), has published several articles and is a reviewer of international journals.
