Seven projects in the Organ-on-Chip Showcases call have been awarded with a grant by Top Sector Life Sciences & Health (LSH). The Top Sector is thus stimulating the development of early phase Organ-on-Chip technology with 2.76 million euros in Public-Private Partnership Allowance. This substantial investment brings together knowledge institutions and companies from the Netherlands and abroad in joint projects. Among these seven projects is the Nano+ project in which the UMC Utrecht Brain Center participates.
The Nano+ project is a public private partnership between TU/e, UMC Utrecht (Jeroen Pasterkamp and Elly Hol) and InnoSer Nederland BV and aims to develop bioreactor technology for measuring electrophysiological activity in ALS patient cell-derived brain organoids. Pasterkamp: “Brain organoids are an important upcoming cellular model for studying brain disease, but measuring neuronal activity in these three-dimensional structures is difficult. With the proposed brain-on-a-chip technology Nano+ will be able to assess changes in brain activity that underlie neurodegenerative diseases such as ALS and that ultimately may be used for drug screening.”
