Cervix Cancer
Radiation therapy for advanced cervical cancer consists of external irradiation of the primary tumour, affected lymphnodes and a volume suspected of microscopic disease. Intracavitary irradiation is used to boost the dose to the primary tumour with a total prescribed dose of approximately 84 Gy. We routinely monitor the response of the tumour to this treatment with a series of MRI scans taken before, during and after the treatment (figure 1). Tumours vary in size (7 to 380 cc) but a fast regression can occur already in the first weeks of treatment.
