How do you make education truly inclusive?

The interfaculty USO-project Designing an Inclusive Curriculum and Learning Environment is launching.

UMC Utrecht and Utrecht University is spearheading a project to promote diversity and inclusion among students and employees. But what do we mean by inclusion? How can we make education more inclusive? How can we ensure that the students feel represented and at home in the learning environment? These are a number of questions that the USO-project will address.

The three-year project will first examine what university programmes are already doing to provide inclusive education and the problems they are experiencing in this area. By collaborating with teachers, researchers, and students, the project group will develop a course and curriculum aimed at inclusivity, which is carried out within the bachelor and master programmes. The results will provide insights for our lecturers and programme directors. In the second year of the project, a toolbox will be developed with instruments and tools to make education more inclusive. This toolbox will contain materials that teachers can use to help develop a more inclusive curriculum.

This project is a collaboration between the three Faculties of Social Sciences (Jeroen Janssen, Professor Leoniek Wijngaards-de Meij), REBO (Brianne McGonigle Leyh) and Medicine (Gönül Dilaver). Additionally, Ulviye Isik, whose PhD focused on the Motivation of Medical Students with a Migration Background, has recently been hired to share her expertise in this area.
