Sleep is disturbed in many if not all psychiatric disorders. It is abnormal in depression, manic depressive disorder, schizophrenia and anxiety disorders. But the disturbance is not the same in each of these disorders. This in itself poses and interesting question: why is that so and what does it tell us about the role of sleep in psychiatry?
This presentation will discuss sleep disturbances in psychiatric illness and what we can discern from that regarding the etiology of sleep problems in particular and psychiatric illness in general. The role of sleep in treatment is discussed as well.
