RF pulse design
Usually, MRI techniques employ RF pulses for slice selective spin excitation. An example thereof is a sinc-shaped pulse with an underlying trapezoidal gradient. In this case, the pulse is selective along one direction, which is given by the gradient. The Bloch equation describes the relationship between the RF, the gradient-fields and the obtained magnetization. Working out this equation, the concept of spatially selective pulses can be generalized to 2 or 3 dimensions to obtain multi-dimensional RF pulses.
