Theme Data Science

Data Science is going to have a huge impact on tomorrow's healthcare. This science uses techniques, theories and models derived from various disciplines within the broad field of mathematics, statistics, information science and computer sciences, with special attention to machine learning, classification, cluster analysis, data and text mining, databases and visualization. The aim of Data Science is to extract scientific knowledge and insights from both structured and unstructured data and to apply this knowledge with impact in healthcare. The Life Sciences & Health sector is extremely rich in data and no one doubts the enormous economic and social potential of data solutions. The Netherlands plays a pioneering role when it comes to Big Data knowledge development, but the practical implementation of applications is lagging behind.

The strategic theme Circulatory Health wants to form a vision and set up a collaboration in the field of data science where several UMC Utrecht groups are already actively engaged in a fragmented manner. This "Data Science Facility for Circulatory Health" collaborates with other initiatives including the Applied Data Analytics in Medicine (ADAM) program at UMC Utrecht and the focus area Applied Datascience of UU. This facility is the programmatic integration of all data science activities and includes all personnel and their infrastructure active in this field in the field of cardiovascular diseases.
